Get the buzz on coffee

How to tell if you are an addict? Coffee that is.

1. You have worn a path in the carpet straight from your bed to the coffee maker.

2. Your teeth are beginning to resemble your great uncle Earl who chews tobacco like a good piece of bubble gum.

3. You realize after the third time in the dishwasher that your dishwasher really is performing fine, it’s your cup that wears a permanent stain.

4. Instead of lunch, you’d rather just pour one more cup.

5. The lady at Starbucks really is not a psychic. It just so happens that you come at the same time every day and place the same exact order.

If this sounds like you, you may have a problem and you should seek help then you just might be a coff-ee-holic. I have great news for you though! Research is now showing that our (yes, I too look like great uncle Earl) bad habit may just give us some fantastic health benefits! Now this is some news that I find as energizing as my hot cup of goodness. This is important considering half of the population of the U.S. drink their daily Joe.

CANCER. Coffee has antioxidant compounds that are being shown to help reduce the risk of cancer. It has been seen that because coffee makes you poop can help increase the time that waste eliminated, therefore decreasing the amount of time that it spends festering in your digestive tract, that this could reduce the risk of colon cancer.

BLOOD PRESSURE. Studies are suggesting that coffee’s healthful compounds can actually counterbalance the effect that caffeine has on blood pressure (so opt for coffee instead of soda).

DIABETES. Harvard researchers recently found that drinking 1-3 cups a day could reduce the risk of diabetes significantly! http://men.webmd.com/features/coffee-new-health-food

CAVITIES. Coffee just might help prevent cavities. Researchers have concluded, “…due to both antibacterial and anti-adhesive activity, coffee might reduce S. mutans colonization of [the] tooth surface and might be effective in preventing S. mutans-induced tooth decay”. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2002/03/020307074142.htm

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE and PARKINSON’S DISEASE. A reduced risk of both.

BRAIN PROTECTION. Among a group of 890 older women, a history of consuming caffeinated coffee throughout their life appears to help preserve cognitive skills — thinking, memory and comprehension — possibly because of long-term caffeine exposure. http://www.mayoclinic.org/news2007-mchi/3910.html

ALZHEIMER’S AND DEMENTIA. Coffee may cut the risk of dementia by blocking the damage cholesterol can inflict on the body, research suggests. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7326839.stm

MOOD, HEADACHES AND INTERNAL STUFF. There is some evidence that coffee may help manage asthma and headaches, boost mood, decrease the risk of liver cirrhosis and drop the risk of gallstones significantly. http://men.webmd.com/features/coffee-new-health-food

So there you have it! Don’t feel bad when brewing your morning goodness, coffee really DOES have perks (no pun intended). It can make you feel fantastic while keeping you healthy. This is all about moderation of course, so please do not drink in excess and blame me! 1-4 cups a day may just keep the doctor away…the trade-off being a smile like Earl’s.

I’m okay with that.
