Doing Nothing Does A Body Good

Doing Nothing Does A Body Good

Today was an “odd” day by normal standards. Odd as in, atypical as opposed to any negative connotations this brings to mind. My typical day really revolves around taking care of needs….the need for food to be in our cupboards so we don’t starve, the need to have the piles and piles and piles of laundry sorted and washed, the need to have a warm and healthy dinner for our family, the need to get homework done, the need to wash off the crusted food from the table and floors, the need to remove everyone’s hand-prints and drawings from the glass they drew on during the prior morning’s condensation on our front door, the need to wipe bottoms, noses and mouths with smeared spaghetti sauce.

Always a need. Never enough time, it seems.

So how do we either “find” the time or “make” the time to play? To do absolutely nothing without guilt? I find myself struggling with this concept on an hourly a daily basis. It seems with so much that has to be done, that it is a challenge to draw the line. To say no to activites and invitations. To have boundaries. To take time to do NOTHING! Let me say that again because it is just that foreign a concept to me…NOTHING!!!

Nothing, Nothing, Nothing. Hm! That is slightly freeing.

So my “atypical” day? Well, It began with coffee in my pajamas (the coffee wasn’t actually “in” my pajamas, rather, I cozied up with M on the couch while merrily sipping my bitter goodness. I made a conscious decision today to be at peace with time. Instead of racing around  causing myself to d*mn near have more panic attacks (that’s another post), I told the kids that I will not run red lights, go 65 in a 25 or leave the house without clothes on all for the sake of being on-time. JUST Joking. I would never speed or run reds.

The climax of my day was a playdate! Yes, it was intended to be for our little guys…but turned out to be a mommy playdate! It was a far cry from my usual, work-work-work kind of day and I actually got dressed put on a cute new pair of jeans that I bought this weekend (the one’s like Katie Holmes with the skinny ankle thing going on-btw, I thought this style was popular like 15 years ago?) a pair of knee-high black boots BUT I clashed my look with the no makeup and pony tail. Baby Steps.

So what did we do? NOTHING! (I am really liking this word). Feeling “zonal” as most moms do at 1:30 in the afternoon, my new friend offered me coffee. Not just ANY coffee. She even had 5 different foo-foo creamers to choose from. Uh huh. That’s right. So with my pumpkin-spice foo-foo and her peppermint mocha, and the kids screaming playing in the dark basement with flashlights…we sat down with no shoes on….on a super comfy couch…with Billy Ocean on her music channel of the t.v. Does it get any better than this?

Well, yes and no. If you want to count the part about her tiny Shih Tzu dog trying to hump her giant Labradore. I dunno. As my friend said “this has been great day! Good coffee, great company, Billy Ocean and dog porn”. Ewww!
