some things should NOT be recycled, or should they?

Dear Mom,

Remember last spring when you brought me your “brand new bra” that you “never wore”. Not just one…but two? Wow. That was……..awesome? Honestly, I was genuinely touched because your are always thinking about my welfare! And really, how many mom’s would actually think about their daughter’s under clothing needs? You always taught me so much about sharing and taking the clothing off your back for someone in need. I never even considered the option of taking the clothing off your front for those less fortunate.

Though each one looked as pristine as those from Victoria’s Secret, and of much higher quality than I would ever even buy myself, I was hesitant. Why? Well, you know I have a terrible time making decisions! Perhaps you should have only brought me one rather than making me choose. You know, decisions like these need to be well-thought-out. Girl’s like me need to carefully weigh the pro’s and cons and my Gosh! Not one, But TWO? The very thought of it.

So in spite of all of this bosom-madness I knew I had to maintain my sense of calm. I knew a decision was in order. I was not about to allow these hand-me-downs to go to waste. No sir! After all, that’s what recycling is all about right? Shouldn’t I be thrilled to wear your bras? Shouldn’t I feel gratitude that my breasts would be well cared for? Shouldn’t I be delighted? Well then…I did what any Earth-loving daughter of a mom who gives out bras would do!

I put them in the neighbor’s garage sale, mom.

I hope you aren’t upset? I decided after looking into the eye’s of the man I love and seeing this sort of “look” that this gift of yours surely might be more in need some where else. Some where “far far away” as my loving husband suggested. Sure, he loves you mom! He does. But you know, the image of your breasts was well, not really something that worked for him. And that’s okay mom, after all, it’s our brain and beautiful spirit that we want others to appreciate us for. Isn’t that what you always told me?

I am sure you made some woman’s day when she found them. I bet she even thinks about it frequently. I want you to know too that even your grand daughter knows how amazing you really are. Here it’s been a whole year since I said “good bye” to them and you know what? Your gesture is still in our hearts. You have taught us some real lessons about what giving and sharing and recycling really means.

M reminded me this morning “you and Nana have the same blood! So that means you have the same boobs too!!!! You should wear Nana’s bras” She was disappointed to hear that your bras were no longer with us. It was a real “teachable moment” though about how important recycling is and how great to know that when she is old enough…I can give her my old bras too since she so strongly believes that I should have kept them! Fun! Maybe I should have saved Nana’s bra for her. Darn-it! Anyway – thank you mom!

All My Love,

Your Appreciative Daughter

P.S. Please never send underwear.

All jokes aside girls – we all have old bras, bras that don’t fit well, bras that sit at the bottom of our drawers, right!??? Recycling bras really is a meaningful gesture, especially to those women who really do need them. The Bra Recyclers is an amazing cause the I heard about and wanted to pass this info on to you!

Their mission is to create awareness about the number of textiles being sent to landfills “that instead could be used for women and girls in our communities who are experiencing challenges in their lives” BB Recycling.

Bra Recyling? Awesome – any way you look at it!
