I have been hearing all about Kale chips lately and wondering what the hype was all about with these little green treats. Kale Chips? Seriously, what the h#ll is this I wondered. So over the weekend, we were finally able to find some! We have been searching at our Farmer’s Market for weeks without any luck until this last weekend…when what to my wondering eyes should appear...crap, wrong season of goodness. Although the Jolly fella sure could use some wholesome Kale Chips instead of all those cookies but whatever.
So we snagged up two bunches of them and off we went on our little cooking adventure. The first batch we made got a little crisp, and by a little crisp I mean charred and the site that I read the recipe from described them as tasting like “ashes” and boy is that the truth. The batches thereafter were really yummy though and a huge hit with even the smallest of critics. SGKids enjoyed every last bit and that’s a true testament to their deliciousness. Kale friends…K.A.L.E. – can you freakin believe it? Kale is indeed tasty, who-da-thunk-it?
So I am thinking we will have to make these again! I can’t wait to pack them up in our school lunches and see how they withstand the “travel” and whether they stay in one piece and don’t crumble to nothing between morning and noon lunch. We will see! I will have to prepare my kids though for any mental torture they might possibly receive from bystanders on what they are eating – maybe I could just print off the recipe and have them pass it out to anyone who snubs asks about them! Hmmm! Now that could be fun. *evil laugh*
Kale Chips
1 bunch of kale
2 tablespoons olive oil
¼ teaspoon salt
- Preheat oven to 350°
- Rinse and chop kale into small pieces
- Put kale in a large bowl with oil and salt
- With hands, toss and mix ingredients together
- Place kale on baking sheet
- Bake at 350° for about 10-15 minutes (until kale is dark green and crispy)

For the more adventurous, add other spices to the salt and oil such as cayenne pepper! Hope you likey – let me know what you think. For those of you who have made these already…what did you think of them? Any thoughts or suggestions for us?

After I do the oil and salt bit, I like to sprinkle on some Mrs. Dash Italian seasoning and crushed fresh garlic. *salivating* Some people like asiago or parm on them too, but this may be the only thing that isn’t made better with cheese.
I’ve made kale chips once before and they didn’t come out that great!
I thought it would be a fun way to get the kids to eat kale, plus I love crunchy foods and since I already LOVE kale, I thought they would be great! Maybe I will try again and see if the second time is better!
Oh Casey, that sounds even better! I love garlic and mmm, italian flavored? I must try this! Thanks
Oh booo! Did they get too done? I notice a huge difference between the ones that are cooked and the ones that are well done. Do try it again and let me know if the second time works better!
We…well, mainly hubby….makes Kale or spinach smoothies!!
Take a handful of kale….then add one banana….and one apple…add a 1/2 cup of plain yogurt…then ice cubes on top and mix!
We do have a special blender for the smoothies…..and its wonderful.
Yum! I will have to try that Melinda
Thanks for the recipe!!!
I can’t make enough kale chips for my kids. They eat them all in one batch! I use a dehydrater which crisps them up nicely with no chance of burning, plus it keeps the enzymes in tact. Best kitchen gadget I ever bought (besides my super duper powered blender
So glad you posted the recipe for using the oven!
This is one of my FAVORITE things to make. Sometimes I don’t cut up the kale, just lay out the pieces on a baking sheet, works the same. Also, I usually put some fresh, crushed garlic on it before baking and even a little Old Bay for a little spice. And sometimes I’ll sprinkle a little lemon juice on top. So good!
Oooh Leesa! That sounds fabulous!! Spice it up a bit and yum! They are so tasty
How do you package them for later eating enjoyment? That’s one part I can’t figure out…would love to pack them in lunches but I am afraid they may crumble! Thanks for your comment! XO
