A Great Read for parents from THE Dr. Laurence Steinberg

Laurence Steinberg

Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D., is the Distinguished University Professor and Laura H. Carnell Professor of Psychology at Temple University. He is the author or coauthor of several books and his work has also appeared in many publications, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

I had the pleasure of reading his fantastic book “You and Your Adolescent,” The Essential Guide for Ages 10-25 which offers practical advice and positive reassurance about raising teens and even preteens in his recently updated version! Steinberg helps parents navigate through the inevitable—and normal—ups and down of adolescence.

According to the well-renowned parent expert…Dr Steinberg…

“Relax! The horror stories you have heard about adolescence are false.” Wow – I hope so!

This is Dr. Laurence Steinberg’s reassuring message to parents in this newly revised edition of his classic book You and Your Adolescent, which Publishers Weekly says is “filled with solid advice for the parents of adolescents.” Among the new topics in this updated edition:

An expanded definition of adolescence to age 25, recognizing that college graduates often remain dependent on their parents for an extended period, creating a new parent-child dynamic

A discussion of social media that addresses whether parents of preteens and young teens should monitor use of these new communication tools

What new research into the adolescent brain tells us about teenage behavior

Laurence Steinberg

“As Dr. Steinberg writes, Most books written for parents of teenagers were survival guides (many still are). Nowadays, adolescence is too long—15 years in some families—for mere survival. Knowledge, not fortitude, is what today’s parents need. That’s where this book comes in.

Adolescence has always been a challenging period of development, but it has changed dramatically since most of today’s parents weathered their own teens. Once limited to the years 13 to 18, adolescence now often begins as early as 10 (because puberty occurs earlier) and extends into the mid-20s (because many kids remain financially dependent on their parents longer). In addition, new technology like cell phones, the Internet, and social networking have changed the way adolescents interact with each other and with the world. The good news, says internationally renowned parenting expert Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D., is that the “troubled teen” stereotype is generally an unfair one—many adolescents are well-adjusted and responsible, and have good relationships with their parents.”

Thank goodness! I have always feared the hormonal years but after reading this book – I feel armed with knowledge and a better understanding of how to work through these years and to continue to strengthen the relationship I am building with my children! I definitely recommend this practical read!

Full Disclosure: I did receive a free copy of this book to read which in now way affected my opinion of it! The content speaks for itself and it is very very valuable to have as a parent.
