Tammy Lakatos Shames and Elysse (“Lyssie”) Lakatos share more than identical features; they share identical success in the competitive field of nutrition and wellness. Lyssie and Tammy, known as The Nutrition Twins®, strive to enhance the lives of others through improved nutrition and lifestyle behavior modification. After relocating from Atlanta, Georgia in 1999, the twins have built a thriving private practice in New York City helping both individual and corporate clients. Tammy and Lyssie have become known for their unique approach to nutrition counseling, corporate lecturing, writing, making media appearances and consulting to multi-national food companies.
The twins’ approachable, common sense style has earned them editorial success. The twins co-authored the revolutionary nutrition book, Fire Up Your Metabolism: 9 Proven Principles for Burning Fat and Losing Weight Forever (Simon and Schuster) and The Secret to Skinny: How Salt Makes You Fat and the 4-Week Plan to Drop A Size & Get Healthier with Simple Low Sodium Swaps (HCI Books). In an exciting venture with Day-Timer®, they have developed a Wellness Planner and a Weight Management Planner for 2009, 2010 and 2011 which they featured several times on QVC.
The twins have been featured regularly as the nutrition experts on Good Morning America Health, The Discovery Health channel, Fox News Channel, NBC, Bravo, WABC-TV, WPIX-TV, CBS, The Learning Channel, FitTV, Oxygen Network, Life and Style, Court TV, Fox & Friends and Fox 5′s Good Day New York. Tammy and Lyssie are nutrition experts on Brooke Burke’s Modernmom.com site and have become sought-after contributors by many print and online publications, including Cosmopolitan, Self, Good Housekeeping, Vogue, InStyle, Woman’s Day, Woman’s World, Parents, First for Women, Oxygen, Muscle Media, OK! In addition to being the resident nutritionists for FitTV online, the twins have served as featured experts on numerous radio stations across the United States and around the world.
Tammy and Lyssie have consulted at over 200 corporations, providing wellness information for almost every type of industry, for most types of sporting activities, and across multiple forms of media. They are the exclusive nutritionists for celebrities and employees at the Rockefeller Center NBC Fitness Center. The twins also have helped fuel the U.S. “Eco-Challenge” team in preparation for the 24-hour competition, and participants in various races and marathons worldwide. Additionally, they have teamed up with Yahoo! and Nivea to serve as the nutrition experts for Nivea’s 2010 Good-bye Cellulite, Hello Bikini! Challenge.
The twins have earned recognition among their peers in the medical community. They were chosen as keynote speakers for the New Jersey State Annual Dietetic Association meeting and were featured speakers for the International Society of Sports Nutrition’s Annual meeting. In addition, they lectured at the Javitz Center for the Medical Spa and Resort Expo.
The twins are Cum Laude graduates of the University of Maryland and received their post-graduate dietetic internships at Emory University and Meredith College. They are ACE-Certified Personal Trainers and are members of the American Dietetic Association and active members of the following Dietetic Practice Groups: Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition(SCAN), Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine DPG (DIFM), Nutrition Entrepreneurs (NE), Dietitians in Business and Communications (DBC). Tammy is the past Director of Member Services for the Nutrition Entrepreneurs Dietetic Practice Group. The twins are also members of The New York State Dietetic Association. In their spare time, the twins volunteer their nutrition expertise at the Gladney Foundation, an organization working to improve the lives of children, adoptive families and women planning adoption.
Tammy and Lyssie reside in New York City where they assist celebrities, professional athletes, and every-day people in attaining their personal health-related goals. Former soccer and speed skating competitors, the twins now enjoy running, pumping iron, and chasing after Tammy’s twin toddlers to keep fit.
